WWIP CISMA

What is a CISMA and why are they important? CISMA stands for Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas and are sometimes referred to as coalitions, partnerships, or councils. CISMAs are formed to collectively combat the problem of invasive species spreading across the landscape. Jennings and Jackson Counties have partnered together to form a CISMA called the Winding Waters Invasive Partnership (WWIP). Members include Jennings County SWCD, Jackson County SWCD, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), State of Indiana Cooperative Invasives Management (SICIM), Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR), and local landowners.

Our mission is to educate about the devastation that invasive species cause to our landscape and provide education on how to eradicate them. We also do events called Weed Wrangles. A Weed Wrangle is a volunteer event focused on removing invasive plants from public lands like parks and green spaces. Led by experts, these events teach volunteers how to identify and remove harmful plants, helping to restore native habitats and ecosystems. The program aims to create a collective effort through hands-on removal, with the goal of replanting native species in the cleared areas. WWIP has held Weed Wrangles in the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, Southeastern Purdue Agricultural Center, and Starve Hallow State Park.
